Introduction to wound infection + management

Wound infection is the invasion of the body by harmful micro-organisms (pathogens), such as bacteria or fungi, which grow and multiply there.

Whether in chronic wounds or acute wounds, it is an important healthcare burden and requires early recognition and prompt intervention. This needs to be appropriate in the background of growing antibiotic resistance and the need for antimicrobial stewardship.

This online module is part of the Essentials of Wound Care series

This online module is Accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England

Learning Objectives

  • Express the terminology related to wound infection.
  • Explain how you could diagnose wound infection using clinical signs + symptoms and microbiological analysis.
  • Explain the relevance of bacterial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Describe the treatment of wound infection.

IODOSORB♢ / IODOFLEX♢ is an antimicrobial range of dressings containing 0.9% Cadexomer iodine. Utilizing the cadexomer smart bead technology, IODOSORB provides a unique multi-action system that combines physical disruption and desloughing with sustained gentle release of iodine as a broad spectrum antimicrobial.

ACTICOAT◇ antimicrobial barrier silver is a range of dressings that utilize the antimicrobial properties of silver to provide an efficient and effective barrier to bacterial penetration

Watch this webinar taught by Wendy White to learn about pressure injury aetiology and to understand what makes this acute injury ‘different’. External forces and the individual’s tolerance influence the impact on local tissues and cells. This webinar is part- of a webinar series which sets the foundation for everyday prevention and management practice strategies and reinforces natural ‘next steps’ in clinical practice.

What you will learn:

  • Describe pressure injury aetiology
  • Demonstrate an understanding of what makes pressure injuries different from other types of wounds
  • Identify components of shear such as external forces and local cell impact

Hard to heal wounds: Disrupting biofilms as a part of wound bed preparation

Dr Matt Malone details the biofilm consensus  paper on wound biofilms highlighted the need for aggressive treatment protocols when biofilms are suspected and proposed a “step down” strategy.

Join us for this informative webinar which will discuss the role of biofilm in delaying wound healing and evidence-based strategies to manage hard-to-heal wounds.

This will also cover the role of hydrosurgical debridement and the use of single-use Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (sNPWT) in an outpatient setting, and includes case studies and live Q&A.
